Contrails of Emergence
For January’s Sculpture of the Month, I have chosen a newer piece to share with you. To me, it reflects our transition from 2020 to 2021 because, unlike all the previous pieces featured in this series, the story of this sculpture – much like the year to come – had yet to be told when this piece was first posted. However, as the result of a naming group I organized on line through the Name a Piece part of my blog it was finally given the name of Contrails of Emergence in mid-February.
I sketched this piece during a solo retreat I took in June of 2009. Living in a yurt on my friends’ land north of Santa Cruz in the redwoods, I was looking for a positive new direction, much as we all are in this new year. My father had died the year before, and I had just sold my habitat restoration business in San Diego. It turned out that this retreat marked the beginning of embracing my art full time and, later, moving to Santa Cruz. I am convinced this sculpture, which played a roll in opening me up to new beginnings, can now play a role in envisioning our goals — both personal and collective — for the coming year, as a vehicle for imagining where we are now headed.
Please join me in discussing your ideas about where we are headed as inspired by this piece below.
