Help Me Name a Sculpture

I have observed that people are often drawn to a particular piece which has something to tell them and that when they explore their reactions to the piece it opens the piece up to understanding by others as well.  Currently, I am experimenting with naming pieces on line.  Read more about the project.

Sculpture of  the Month

After the Covid shutdown I decided to start a project to share the history of one of my pieces a month with my mailing list. The first Sculpture of the Month was in June 2020 and I continue to pick a new piece to narrate each month. Hope you enjoy the works featured and feel free to email me a request to write about one of your favorites from my gallery images (https://burkhart-sculptor.com/gallery/ ) in future months.

The Poetry Book Project

During 2000,  I originated the first of several collaborative arts projects with my work:  The Poetry Book Project. Eighteen local San Diego poets, many associated with the creative writing program at San Diego State University were invited to view my relief sculptures and asked to choose one or more to write poems about.  Read more about the project.

The Music Project

Two local San Diego composers were invited to view my relief sculptures and were asked to choose one or more pieces to use as an inspiration for musical compositions and performances.  These compositions were then performed at the BEC Gallery show opening in May of 2001.

Fusion of Art & Physics Project

Dr. Stephanie Bailey of the UC Santa Cruz Physics faculty conceived this project which took place during the fall of 2018 and the Spring of 2019 in Santa Cruz, CA. 17 Local artists were carefully matched with 17 physics faculty or graduate students to work together to produce art work related to the physics researchRead more about the project.

Sculpture Rental Program

I have now started a Sculpture Rental program for those who live in the Santa Cruz, Monterey, Silicon Valley or San Diego areas where you can rent one of my sculptures 6 months or longer and later apply rental fees to the purchase of the piece.  The cost is less than your monthly fee for Netflix. If you qualify I personally hang the piece for you and later pick it up at the end of the rental period.  You can also extend the rental period or rent a different sculpture at the end of your rental agreement. To see if you qualify: Read more about the project.

Book: Reflexions: Sculpture & Poetry

Seattle poet Cheryl Latif, one of the original Poetry Project participants, and I collaborated over a two year period along with her talented publisher  friend Jan Carpenter Tucker of San Diego to produce this hardcover book of eckphrastic poetry.  Cheryl chose 40 of my sculptures to inspire her to write 40 poems,  Jan then created an imaginative layout for the book which opposes high quality p;hotos of the sculptures oppposite the poems.  The book is available on the BookBaby publishing site for $35 plus shipping as well several bookstores in the Santa Cruz area.  A Zoom Book Launch was held in December of 2023 where the author’s and publishers discussed  how they created the book thru online coordination during the height of the COVID epidemic.
