The October Sculpture of the Month has always been one of my favorites. Completed in 2007, The Mermaid and the Minotaur appears as the feature image on my postcard for Santa Cruz Open Studios happening October 9th & 10th.
A number of my pieces have featured mermaids over the years. In this one, the mermaid and a smaller, minotaur-like figure appear to consult with a seahorse. Because of their unique eyesight, seahorses symbolize intuition and the ability to see the past, present, and future at the same time.
In her prescient 1976 book titled The Mermaid and the Minotaur, Dorothy Dinnerstein posited that when the duty of raising children gets carried out mainly by women, the wider culture will develop a patriarchal “mastery” of nature that leads to species extinctions and climate change.
Perhaps the seahorse in this piece also has prescient insights that can lead us to a better balance with the natural world.
The Mermaid and the Minotaur
Two weeks ago, I had my first showing in the San Jose area during Silicon Valley Open Studios and found a lot of interest in my work! Several works sold to people deeply inspired by the stories in the pieces they took home. I continue to see clearly that when someone feels truly inspired by one of my sculptures, they want to hang it in their space so it can work its magic.
